COMPETITIVE COMMUNICATION

Observe the way people talk to one another and notice how sometimes the conversation can take on competitive airs. Everyone is trying to one-up everyone else, or get in the last word. As they are all engaged in out-talking one another, the purpose of communication gets lost.

It may not be their intent to be aggressive or contentious. Sometimes, they are trying to demonstrate their seriousness or diligence. Perhaps they feel that talking more is a way to be seen as doing more.

In contrast to this style, Tao cultivators feel no need to compete when they communicate. They say only what needs to be said and come to a graceful stop, and they are not interested in having the last word. People who need to compete can do so until they tire themselves out, while Tao cultivators remain above the fray.

The Tao Today

Be clear about the purpose of your communication. You communicate to convey information and further harmony, not to demonstrate some sort of superiority. Relax in this understanding, and let others do as much talking as they feel they must.
