THE WINDS OF CHANGE

So many things we see around us are cyclical in nature, and the economy is no exception. Boom times followed by recession and vice versa. For a while, good fortune is like a strong wind at our back, propelling us toward prosperity. Then, all too soon, the wind changes and blows us away from where we want to go.

Skillful sailors do not worry about the changing winds. They never curse at them or blame their fellow sailors. They simply adjust the rigging and rudder to leverage the wind at a different angle. After a course correction, the boat continues on toward the intended port.

Skillful cultivators are the same way. When the economic winds change, they do not rage against the economy, nor do they blame the government or the company. They simply adjust their approach and update and update their skill sets to take advantage of the new direction. Soon, they continue on their way toward the original destination of prosperity.

Watch for complacency in every aspect of life, particularly with work. Have you taken your job for granted, perhaps intending to retire in it? Are you able to take on duties different from your current specialty? Are you someone who remains highly employable and competitive in the job marketplace, regardless of the economy? Keep the skillful sailor in mind as you sail the seas of fortune.
