UNDIVIDED ATTENTION

An increasingly common sight in the modern world is people being distracted while communicating with others. For instance, a teenager may be texting while carrying on an in-person conversation; a coworker may be talking to you while keeping an eye on the computer monitor.

Chances are they do not understand the negative impact that this has on others. It is impolite at best, and it undermines whatever positive impressions may have been created.

Tao cultivators, on the other hand, demonstrate respect for others by giving them undivided attention when conversing with them. Paying only partial attention sends the signal that the communication is unimportant. Instead, you want to send the signal that you honor every exchange. You always do this regardless of what others do, because you know you are responsible for your communication.

The Tao Today

Challenge yourself to be fully present when interacting with other people today. Remember that sincere, heartfelt communication from one soul to another is sacred. Keep this in mind when you communicate, even when the other party has no understanding or appreciation of this principle. The Tao shines all the more brightly when its application in the real world is not so easy.
