THE STRONG WIND
Since ancient times, the sages have learned from nature and applied the principles to living the Tao-centric life. They observed the weather and noted that a strong wind never lasted very long. Sooner or later, it had to die down.
In life, the wind can serve as a metaphor for human communication. Someone who talks a lot is long-winded; an arrogant and pompous person is said to be full of hot air. If nature, in its infinite wisdom, chooses not to blow strong wind all day, the human beings should also follow this example and avoid talking nonstop.
This does not mean you should speak in monosyllables or take vows of silence. What it does mean is that when it is time to speak, you should express yourself completely, and then come to a stop without needing to drag anything out. By doing this, you will be like the wind, and therefore act in accordance with the Tao.
The Tao Today
An interesting practice to try is to be quiet after you are done talking. This sounds simple, but notice how people will often become uncomfortable with the silence, and then attempt to fill it with sound. Allow yourself to feel just as comfortable with the moments of silence as you are with moments of expression. Let the silence speak.
