EFFORTLESS ACTION
To understand effortless action, we begin with the concept of effortlessness, which can be observed throughout nature. Flowers bloom at the right time effortlessly, without strife. They have no deadlines to meet, and they do not stress themselves out trying to out-bloom one another. When the time comes, they do what comes naturally, and the result is beautiful.
Next, we take it a step further with the realization that we are different from flowers in certain ways. Once a flower has been planted, it remains in place and simply grows. Human beings, on the other hand, have mobility and the ability to take action. It is just as natural for you to act as it is for the flower to be. Thus, emulating the wisdom of nature, for you, means more than being inactive.
This is why the sages talk about effortless action, not of inaction. The growth of a flower corresponds to the natural, non-striving actions of a human being. When you engage in such actions, you can be very diligent and disciplined, and yet remain free of strife and stress. In time, your work will also bloom when the moment is right. Having done what comes naturally, your result will be beautiful.
