WORDS
As your journey nears its end, it is fitting to recall the very first lesson the Tao TeChing: the eternal Tao is beyond the power of words to completely describe or define. We have certainly used many words in the previous pages of this book. If none of the words can describe or define the Tao, then what have we accomplished, if anything?
It all depends on how you approach the words. If you are fixated on the words themselves, or if you overanalyze the specific meaning of this word versus that word, then you have missed the point of Tao teachings entirely.
If, on the other hand, you have used words like a finger pointing at the moon, then you know that the hours you have spent are the best possible use of your time. The words themselves cannot describe or define the Tao, but they can guide you toward the Tao, Once you are immersed in that state of being, no words are necessary.
The Tao Today
Recognize that words are labels, and always look beyond them for the deeper truth. If someone describes a concept that you associate with the Tao, but uses different words like “God” or “the source” or “infinite intelligence” or “ universal consciousness,” mentally peel off the labels to see the underlying meaning. No matter how different traditions express themselves, always look beyond the stylistic differences to seek the underlying commonality. That is where we will find the spiritual truths that unite all of us beyond words.
