WORK AND REST

Authentic cultivators of the Tao honor the cycles of work and rest. When they work, they do the best job they can. When they rest, they take the appropriate amount of time, neither too much nor too little. This allows them to get back to work at their best.

If this seems too simple, consider how many people are frequently tired from sleep deprivation. When they work, they are not able to bring effort and efficiency to the task at hand. When they rest, they are not able to relax completely. This makes them even less effective when they resume working.

The key difference is mindful awareness. During the day, Tao cultivators are not just going through the emotions while wishing they could be somewhere else. They bring their full attention to the job at hand and complete their tasks with excellence. At night, they are able to sleep soundly, knowing they have fulfilled their duties for the day. They do not toss and turn, because their mind is at peace. They wake up completely refreshed and energized, ready to take on the world.

The Tao Today

Practice mindful awareness today. When you detect yourself daydreaming, gently guide yourself back to the present moment. Plan out your day with an eye toward completing a realistic amount of work, neither too much nor too little. Adhere to the plan so that yo hit all of your targets by the end of the day. This will free you up to not think about work at all as you thoroughly enjoy your personal time at home.
