FEAR RESPONSE

One hallmark of the wise cultivator is the recognition that everything in the world can be utilized to our benefit, even things we usually regard in a negative light.

For instance, the Tao perspective recognizes fear as a product of nature. It is an internal signal, honed by countless years of evolution, that protects us from violence. It is a survival alert that helps us avoid danger. In that regard, it can be a very useful tool.

It is only when we go into extremes that this tool changes from help to hindrance. Excessive fear keeps us from enjoying life when we shrink back even from things that are not dangerous. In order to master fear, we need to moderate it to the appropriate level, where it retains its natural usefulness without becoming an obstacle in life.

The Tao Today

When you look at your life, can you see instances where fear played a role in a decision that you later regretted? Did it immobilize you until a window of opportunity was gone? If so, consider an internal adjustment for your fear response. Acknowledge its role in your life, but do not let it rule your life. Control it, rather than letting it control you.
