HANDLING PRAISE

One common pattern that sages observer over and over again is the tendency toward arrogance when one receives praise. the sense of pride swells with each compliment until it grows out of control, leading to eventual downfall. Arrogance leads to failure, and then to regrets.

Although history is filled with many examples of this, many people are still attracted to the spotlight like moths to a flame. They crave the approval of others, and they will do almost anything to get it. Chapter 39 of the Tao Te Ching compares them to glittering jade, always ready to be the center of attention. The sages, on the other hand, are more like ordinary rocks. They have no wish to display themselves, and they require no eternal validation.

This does not mean they run away from the spotlight or go to great lengths to hide themselves. They simply handle praise with composure. If others applaud them, they accept the applause with gratitude and courtesy, and then gently return to their previous state of quiet reserve.

The Tao Today

The key to the sages’ ability to handle praise is that they demand far more from themselves than others do, so for them getting approval from people is not a great cause for celebration. Incorporate this into your thinking, and you will find it easier to free yourself from the need to seek recognition.
