THE MOUTH

There are multiple references to the mouth in the Tao Te Ching, and in two of its chapters, we are instructed to close it. Given the overall conciseness of the Tao Te Ching, we can tell this must be an important point.

Probably the first thought that comes to mind upon hearing “close the mouth” is to be quiet. This is indeed an important part of the Tao practice, since quietness leads to tranquility, and tranquility leads to clarity. However, this is not the only reason to close it.

Another part, equally important, is the recognition that the mouth is a major source of trouble. What do lies, curses, rumors, gossip, harsh condemnations and leaked secrets have in common? That’s right, the mouth. This is reflected in the popular Chinese saying “Disasters come out of the mouth,” which is similar to our more familiar saying, “Loose lips sink ships.” Is it any wonder that the sages would prefer to have it closed as much as possible?

The Tao Today

In addition to the above, it should also be noted that the mouth plays a major role in various food substance addictions. That is all the more reason to watch the mouth closely. Without discipline, it can quickly become a passage leading to temptations, distractions and errors in judgement. When in doubt, keep it closed. It is the safe thing to do.
