THE CONTRACT

One of the most intriguing passages of the Tao Te Ching is in chapter 79:

The sage holds the left part of the contract

But does not demand payment from the other person

It is interesting because it gives us a glimpse into ancient China. Back in Lao Tzu’s time, a lending agreement would be carefully torn in two parts, with the left going to the lender, and the right going to the borrower. The lender could use the left half to demand payment from the borrower until the borrower paid off the loan. At that point, the left half is given to the borrower, making the contract whole and marking the end of the debt.

Thus, these lines are saying the sage gives to everyone without expecting anything in return. He holds the left part of the contract, because people owe him for the wisdom and guidance he has provided them. However, he has no intention of using it to demand payment, now or ever. This is the generosity of the sage.

The Tao Today

Can you live your life with the same generosity, to give with absolutely no expectations? Many people keep track of favors. They are concerned about being “even” with others. A sage does not have the same concern. As long as people benefit from the Tao, that is payment enough.
