BEING DISTINGUISHED
In our competitive society, some feel that they would be at a disadvantage if they follow the Tao teachings on humility. What if another applicant gets the job because you have remained quiet about your qualifications? What if a coworker gets promoted because you have remained quiet about your achievements?
Lao Tzu addresses this misconception in chapter 22 of the Tao Te Ching:
Without flaunting themselves - and so are seen clearly
Without presuming themselves - and so are distinguished
Those who understand the Tao can describe their qualifications and achievements as facts without flaunting themselves in a presumptuous way. This is actually much more convincing than the braggarts who put themselves on display. It also makes them unique in our society, where hyping up oneself has almost become the norm. By being low-key skillfully, in accordance with the Tao, they become conspicuous and distinguished.
The Tao Today
Us the Tao to achieve quiet excellence in your work. Once you have done this correctly, you can simply let your work speak volumes on your behalf. People who work with you will also recognize what you bring to the table. A positive assessment from them will carry far more weight than the self-praise that some people like to heap upon themselves.
