SHORTCUTS

We have entire self-improvement industries built on the illusion of shortcuts. Whether it is infomercials on late-night television or websites hawking various products, we are bombarded with promises of outstanding results that require little or no work at all.

This appeal works on most people, but the promises invariably fail to live up to the hype. Exercise equipment ends up being neglected and gathering dust, while people look for the next breakthrough that promises even better results for even less work. Few realize that the fitness models employed in such commercials sculpt their physiques not with the products being sold, but simply by spending time in the gym with consistent discipline. It is simple in essence and there are no tricks, gimmicks or shortcuts.

It is the same with spiritual development. People look for shortcuts there as well. They want instant enlightenment requiring little work. They flock to various gurus, and often fail to enlighten anything other than the wallet. Real masters of spiritual wisdom never rely on shortcuts. They put in the consistent discipline to work on themselves, knowing that the progress may seem slow, but the results they end up with will be real and lasting.

The Tao Today

Beware of the quick fix and the glib tongue. Steel yourself against the temptation to take shortcuts. Look at the shortcuts through the eyes of the Tao and see their illusory nature. In spirituality as in other aspects of life, slow and steady wins the race.
